Mel’s Revisited - New Works by Mary Scobie

April 4, 2025 – May 2, 2025

Mel's Tea Room was a local landmark on Sackville's Bridge Street from the mid 1940's until a few years ago. The folklore of Mel's is shared by both locals and over eight decades of Mount Allison students.  The cooks changed.  The menu seldom changed.  The facade of the building never changed and the sign, a beacon on Bridge Street, has been retained by the current owners of the building and continues today.  A measure of respect for the historical significance of Mel's Tea Room.

Mary Scobie's new exhibition of eighteen recently completed oil paintings pays homage to this local landmark and explores current gathering places like Cranewood on Main and Blooms on York Street.  These works are lovingly prepared with the eye of one who has grown up in this town and returns often to witness changes.  And change is constant.  All the more reason to celebrate the revisiting of our local landscapes.

Raised in Sackville, New Brunswick, Mary received a Diploma in Graphic Design from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and a Bachelor of Music Degree from Mount Allison University - Class of 1984. When not painting, she is a freelance graphic designer for music and arts organizations in Victoria, British Columbia where she currently resides.

She has exhibited her paintings in solo and group shows in New Brunswick and British Columbia. Her works can be found in private collections in Canada, Scotland and the United States.
