"Although there are many advantages to current technology, it has changed the way we live. Everyday there is pressure to plug into, consume, and respond to an overwhelmingly complex digital consciousness. And because this is unnatural, I believe it often adds a layer of additional stress to our daily lives. Moreover, we get so absorbed in it that we forget, or take for granted, the things that are natural and beautiful in our world.
For me, excursions into nature become more and more of a reprieve from this "other world" that we have created. To see the reality of colour, to hear the sounds of living things, to feel the wind and smell the air -- these things ground us in what is really important in life...all that we take for granted!
When I paint a landscape or seascape, I want to share that experience that I am having in that place with the viewer. I want to bring the scene alive for others to experience it too...maybe even to inspire others to seek out their own, or recall, similar experiences in nature. I hope people do not forget that these places exist. Honour them and experience them yourself using all of the senses we have been given."
Michael McEwing was born in Campbellton, New Brunswick in 1973. He grew up in Fredericton, where he first developed an interest in art at a very young age. Today, he works as an artist in a variety of different mediums, including oil painting, intaglio and relief printmaking and mixed media.
After successfully completing the first year of Mount Allison University’s Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) programme in 1993, McEwing decided to transfer to an Art Education programme at the University of New Brusnwick. He graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree, majoring in Secondary Arts (Fine Arts) and minoring in English.
A growing interest in the educational possiblities of the Internet led McEwing to seek employment in the e-Learning sector of the Information Technology industry. During this time, he continued to pursue part-time studies at the University of New Brunswick and in 2000 he received a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Multimedia Studies. Michael completed his degree requirements at Mount Allison University and received his BFA in the spring of 2006.
Michael McEwing continues to deal with technological themes in some of his printmaking and mixed media works. His painting typically deals with narrative, figurative and landscape subject matter.
McEwing has recently exhibited his works in various solo and group exhibitions in Fredericton, Hartland and here at Fog Forest Gallery.
