David B. Gillespie
b. 1956, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada
David B. Gillespie is an established Canadian artist/printmaker whose handmade, original works range from realism in the form of landscapes and architecture to vibrant and inspiring abstracts. Much of his artistic expression he refined while living in Nova Scotia where keen observation, humour and a love of the natural environment influenced his vision. As one of a relatively small number of artists who use the serigraph, or silkscreen process to create original prints. David employs various techniques he continues to experiment with to produce his editions. Original serigraph prints are produced through a meticulous technical and creative process in which areas are blocked out on a fine-meshed nylon screen to create a stencil. Ink is then forced through the screen onto the paper. Each colour to be printed requires a stencil and David may use up to 30 stencils to complete an image. The stencils are destroyed as the print evolves thus ensuring a limited edition.
David worked as a technician at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto before moving to Nova Scotia where he began his work as an artist. He has worked extensively with oil and acrylic painting and photography. He continues to favour serigraphy as his chosen medium. He now lives in Ontario and continues to mount solo and group exhibitions in both Ontario and the Maritimes. His work has been included in a range of collections.
A suite of serigraph/mixed media editions based on the geology of Flowers Cove Newfoundland is currently underway. “Timelines” (2016), is the first edition produced.
