Karen Shackleton's paintings are dramatic and expressive. Her use of colour and texture create works which interpret the natural surroundings and give life to the landscape she explores and the farm animals she portrays. Sunlight explodes on a distant mountain. Storm clouds gather over the Irish coast. Karen Shackleton's landscape paintings are fresh and exciting.
Karen attended the fine arts programme at Mount Allison University in Sackville, N.B.for a number of years before transferring to the New Brunswick Craft School in Fredericton N.B. In 1988, she graduated with a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
In 2002, Karen travelled to Ireland where she was involved in a three week residency at Cill Rialaig Artist Retreat in County Kerry. From that experience, she has produced a strong series of landscape paintings depicting the atmosphere and emotion of the Irish countryside.
Recent exhibitions include solo shows at Buckland Gallery, Trinity Galleries and the Aitken Bicentennial Centre in Saint John, N.B. and group exhibitions in Gagetown and Fredericton, N.B. Karen's works are found in the public collection of the University of New Brunswick. She has received a number of awards and grants from the Province of New Brunswick.
